About Martin Abel

Hi! My name is Martin Abel, I am a freelance illustrator, and this is my website. However, if you're reading this, odds are you already knew that much. Here's where I'd like to tell you a bit about myself that you might not know.

I am based out of Melbourne, Australia, and have been working professionally since 2003 creating pinup art and magazine illustrations. My work has been featured in various publications, including Official Xbox Magazine, Maximum PC, Ralph, Picture Premium, and Metal Hammer Magazine, as well as in comic books from Viper Comics. This artwork has ranged from small, header illustrations to large, double-page spreads, and even extended pages of sequential artwork.

Although largely known for my signature pinup-style art, I can create high-quality artwork in any number of styles to suit the client and job at hand.

As with many in the art field, I have been drawing since I was very young. Some of my first illustrations were of Thomas the Tank engine and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. My first published work was a short comic strip for the newspaper when I was eleven. In my early teenage years, I discovered my first true love, J. Scott Campbell's Gen13. Every scrap of my adolescent bankroll went towards buying comic books for inspiration and paper upon which to feverishly create.

And thus I discovered a world all of my own creation.

At the tail end of my teenage years, I received my Diploma of Illustration and was excited to continue expanding this universe into which I had plunged myself. I was determined to make illustration my career, and not settle for work doing something I hated. In 2002, I created this website and displayed the best work I had in my fledgling portfolio. It was my kick start into making a living doing what I love.

Apart from drawing, I have a deep passion for storytelling via the television and film mediums. And, not content to be a passive viewer, I love learning what goes into the creation of these stories-in-motion. Among my favorites are LOST, Heroes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Roswell, and Supernatural. As might be evident by those choices, I have a passion for all things mysterious and paranormal, and a big interest in fate, destiny, and coincidences.

I've also been an avid gamer for some time, and would love to one day work on concept art for games.

I owe much of where I am to the support of my family and loving girlfriend, even as I continue to grow as an artist with each inch of graphite placed and every stroke of the digital paintbrush made.

My creative universe is ever-expanding, and I hope that it might intersect your own visions, and that we will be able to work together.
